Escape Audio Book
This audiobook is based on the memoires of Carolyn Jessop, an extraordinary lady who managed to escape the clutches of a brutal and abusive cult, the so-called Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with her eight children.
This is a true story that depicts the struggle for survival. Born into the polygamist society that is the cult, Carolyn was forced into marriage at the age of eighteen as wife number four of Merrill Jessop, who just happened to be one of the most prominent leaders in the commune. She became a baby-producing machine, falling pregnant almost every year and struggled against her husband’s oppression, the other women, and the violent, degrading nature of the community.
She describes the awful events leading to her breaking free from the harsh world she knew and how she has been able to survive since the escape, in spite of the threats and legal wrangling with her spouse and the Church. The narrator of the audio book, a lady by the name of Alison Fraser, has perfectly captured the strength and vulnerability Carolyn shows, alongside her naivety and wily intellect, making Escape a spellbinding and very convincing audiobook. Listeners will be captivated and feel as if Carolyn Jessop herself is relating the story, which to us is the mark of a flawlessly produced audio book.
